Affects memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily
functioning
Alzheimers is most common form of progressive dementia
Causes slight but noticeable decline in cognitive abilities
Causes- damage of nerve cells in brain that can occur in several areas of the brain
Patients with alzheimers have plaques( clumps of protein called beta-amyloid) and
tangles ( fibrous tangles made up of tau protein) in their brain
Other types of progressive dementia
• Chronic traumatic encephalopathy- found in athletes with history of
repetitive brain trauma
Dementia- like conditions that can be reversed
• Infections and immune disorders
• Metabolic problems
• Endocrine abnormalities
• Nutritional deficiencies
• Reaction to medication
Risk Factors that can’t be changed
• Age
• Family History
• Down syndrome
• Mild cognitive impairment
Prevalence of dementia expected to double from 35.6 million to 65.7 million
Risk factors you can change
• Heavy alcohol consumption
• Cardiovascular
• Depression
• Diabetes
• Smoking
• Sleep apnea
Exercise can help with using these risk factors
Dementia can lead to inadequate nutrition, pneumonia, inability to perform self-care
tasks and death
There is no single test used to diagnose dementia
Diagnosis requires at least 2 core mental functions to be impaired enough to
interfere with daily living
Clinicians use cognitive and neuropsychological tests, neurological evaluations,
brain scans, lab tests and psychiatric evaluation
