Document Summary
Lecture 12: exercise/pa and mental health depression (con"t) and dementia. Con"t from last class - study: effects of exercise training on older patients with major. The study lasted 16 weeks and were tested on ham-d and bdi (depression scores) as well as aerobic capacity, life satisfaction, self-esteem, anxiety, and dysfunctional cognitions. 0. 90: this suggests that exercise can improve depressive symptoms when compared to other depressed individuals who are not receiving exercise. & constable, 2005: depression is associated with reduced hippocampal volume (campbell & macqueen, 2004), may be related to memory deficits: depression is often associated with high or dysregulated cortisol secretion (kunugi et al. , chronically high levels of cortisol are independently implicated in both episodic memory deficits and reduced hippocampal volume. In those with depression, memory function improves with successful treatment. If exercise is an efficacious treatment, it may do the same thing: exercise has been shown to improve episodic memory in healthy young adults.
