Kinesiology 1080A/B Lecture 24: March 25
Document Summary
Control system with preprogrammed instruction to effector that does not use feedback, error detection, or correction mechanisms: reference mechanism not present, feedback unavailable, simply goal with instructions to achieve. Early studies (sherrington: sectioning dorsal roots (sensory) prevents movement, results: movement limited but still present. Later studies (rothwell: individuals can program actions without sensory input. Cat"s midbrain resected and placed on treadmill: prevents motor commands from leaving brain and sensory information from periphery coming to brain. Cat completely paralyzed however when bolted upright can walk on moving treadmill: gate accommodates treadmills direction (forward or backward, speed accommodates treadmill speed (slower or faster) Noticed with babies prior to being able to walk on own. Produces rhythmic movement with higher motor centers. Must be ongoing input to maintain movement by flexors and extensors. Treadmill therapy for quadrapoligiques may permit some function recovery. Body weight must be fully supported (by harness)
