Kinesiology 1080A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: La Liga, Quartile
Topic 6
After midterm 2
Birthday Asymmetry affect
• Anyone born between first quartile of the year tends to do good in soccer
• They looked at different leagues- school youth, regional youth, La liga, Basque population, Elite
league
• Percentage of athletes decreases linearly as we move down quartiles
• Known as Birthday asymmetry affect in sports
• Looked at every sport possible in North America
• Why? → Gives them 7-8 extra months to develop → Maturation is an element
o Child born in Q1 is better, bigger, better cognitive ability, stronger and CONFIDENT
with abilities
o They end up enjoy it lot because they are doing better→ they will play more
o Playing more will lead to being chosen for elite competitive teams which will give them
better coaching
• Preventing→ coaches who coach young people should give them chance for them to develop
and don’t spend all the time on few kids
3 Stage model
Second Stage→ Response Selection
Response Selection Stage
- Once stimulus is identified, the appropriate action must be selected
- Eg. “ to brake or swerve to avoid a parked car”
- Spatial compatibility
Factors that influence Response selection
- Number of stimulus response alternatives
- Stimulus compatibility
Stimulus Response Alternatives
- Increasing the number of alternatives relevant to a response increased the time required to process
and select an appropriate response
Hick’s Law
- Task → Choice reaction time task
- Results → RT increased by 150ms every time the S-R alternatives doubled
Thus, relationship between choice RT and the logarithm of the S-R alternatives is linear

Document Summary
Once stimulus is identified, the appropriate action must be selected. To brake or swerve to avoid a parked car . Increasing the number of alternatives relevant to a response increased the time required to process and select an appropriate response. Results rt increased by 150ms every time the s-r alternatives doubled. Thus, relationship between choice rt and the logarithm of the s-r alternatives is linear. Stimulus information in bits on x axis and rt time on y axis. This equation can be adapted to compute an rt value in a choice rt task. Choice rt = a+b {log 2 (n)} Y intercept- a represents a simple reaction time. B- slope- how much does reaction time change as you go from one bit of information to another. What is the log to the base of 2 (n) it represent the index of difficulty in a bit of information.
