Goal setting: a process of establishing a target or objective in specific behavioural terms. Three main types of goals: outcome goals = win/lose, performance goals = how well play/ personal best (preferred due to greater personal control, process goals = actions to execute in order to perform better. Direct effect: directs attention and action (choice, mobilizes energy (effort/vigor, prolongs effort (persistence, encourages the development of strategy to attain goal(s) (action plan) Indirect effect: influences performance by working on psychological states (anxiety, confidence, satisfaction, attention, etc. ) Increases productivity and improves quality of work: clarifies expectations, relieves boredom, provides personal recognition. Goals can be set for: training sessions (log book, practice session (areas to work on, competitive events, team social events. For each of these sessions or events, goals can be focused on: Goal setting is an extremely powerful technique for enhancing performance, but it must be implemented correctly.
