Non experimental method: use of measurement of variables to determine whether variables are related to one another; correlation method. Ie. asking people to describe their behaviour, directly observing behaviour, examining public records. Third variable: when describing a relationship between 2 variables, a third variable is any other variable that is extraneous to the 2 variables of interest. True experiments control for the possible in uence of third variables. Experimental method: a method determining whether variables are related in which the researcher manipulates the independent variable and controls all other variables. Reduces vagueness in the interpretation of the results. One variable is manipulated and a second variable is measured. If the variable is held constant, it can"t be responsible for the results of the experiment. The only difference between groups should be the variable you"re manipulating. Randomization: controlling for the effects of extraneous variables by ensuring that the variables operate in a manner determined entirely by chance.
