Empiricism: use of objective observations to answer a question. Variable: any event, situation, behaviour, or characteristic that varies. Independent variable: the variable that is manipulated to observe it"s effect in the dependant variable - cause. Dependant variable: variable that is the response to, and dependant on, the level of the manipulated independent variable - effect. A statement that makes an assertion about what is true in a particular situation; often a statement asserting a relationship between two or more variables. Operational definition: definition of a concept that specifies the operation used to measure or manipulate the concept. Variable is an abstract concept, operational definition is the concrete transition of that concept: gather data. Controlled experiment with valid & reliable measures: analyze results. Never prove a hypothesis, just support it: communicate results.
