Document Summary

The heart is located in a pericardium (bag of connective tissue) within the mediastinum (middle region) Sits directly in between the right and left lung, slightly at an angle off to the left side: divisions of the mediastinum, superior mediastinum = 1st rib to sternal angle. Pericardial layers = covering of the heart: fibrous pericardium loose fitting sac of connective tissues around the heart, serous pericardium 2 layers that line the inner fibrous layer and form the external layer of the heart. Produces serous fluid which sits within pericardial sac: parietal layer to the side, lines the fibrous pericardium, sits directly underneath. At the great vessels it becomes the visceral layer. The 2 layers are continuous with each other: pericardial cavity fluid containing space between the layers of the serous pericardium. Because the blood can by- the lungs as we are not breathing yet.
