Kinesiology 2236A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Onstar, Relative Risk
Document Summary
Internal risk factors: predispose an athlete to injury. Inciting event: nothing can do about it, but happened as a result of the situation. One of the most important roles is to minimize activity related to injury. Try to improve benefit: risk ratio: want to find a balance because if risks are too high, will stop playing. Can be characterized by being: primary, secondary, tertiary. We use the term prevention synonymously with primary prevention. Prevention: athlete technique, neuromuscular function, conditioning, surroundings: floor/surface friction, rules, equipment: shoe friction, protective properties. Can be defined as things to protect the athlete should a potentially injurious situation arise. This includes sports equipment like: release bindings, helmet, technology, shin pads for soccer/hockey, taping or bracing, also includes training proper falling technique, conditioning to strengthen structures so they can tolerate increased force, etc. Focus on reducing the consequences of injury. May include things like emergency medical coverage, first aid equipment and rehab.
