Kinesiology 2241A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Transverse Plane, Sagittal Plane, Flat Feet
Document Summary
The arches of the foot: the foot is made up of several bones that each articulate with one another. The leg rotates externally, the arches rise and foot becomes more rigid: with high arches, feet are really rigid. When you hit the ground with a rigid foot you end up getti(cid:374)g pro(cid:271)le(cid:373)s higher up i(cid:374) hips a(cid:374)d lo(cid:449)er (cid:271)a(cid:272)k (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause you do(cid:374)"t ha(cid:448)e a(cid:374)y sho(cid:272)k a(cid:271)sorptio(cid:374: when you have flat arches your foot is really floppy. This means you can"t push of the ground very efficiently. Foot pain can occur when the arch is always too high and rigid (pes cavus) or the arch is too low and flexible (pes planus: these conditions are often treated with othotics. Poor foot alignment: regardless of the arches, when standing quietly all five toes should be on the ground, whe(cid:374) they do(cid:374)"t, it is (cid:272)alled forefoot (cid:448)arus or (cid:448)algus depe(cid:374)di(cid:374)g o(cid:374) the dire(cid:272)tio(cid:374) of t(cid:449)ist of the foot.
