Document Summary

Foot arch pathologies: foot pain can occur when the arch is always too high and rigid (pes cavus) or the arch is too low and flexible (pes planus) these conditions are often treated with orthotics. Proper foot alignment: regardless of the arches, when standing quietly, all 5 toes should be on the ground. When they don"t, its called forefoot varus or valgus: depending on the direction of twist of the foot. Proper lower extremity alignment: the legs have a proper alignment as well the 2 legs should be symmetrical the lower legs should be vertical the pelvis should be horizontal. Varus alignment: abnormal and means that the segment distal to the joint (hip, knee or ankle) is rotated in the frontal plane too far laterally. Valgus alignment: abnormal and opposite of varus the segment distal to the joint (hip, knee or ankle) is rotated in the frontal plane too far medially.
