Kinesiology 2241A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Acetabular Labrum, Ischiofemoral Ligament, Gluteus Minimus Muscle
Document Summary
Deep ball and socket joint between femur and pelvis. On the pelvis at distal end of ilium is acetabulum. The hip is the articulation between the head of the proximal femur and the acetabulum of the pelvis. The acetabulum is a deep socket that provides a great amount of bony constraint. However, the hip joint also possesses a large range of motion in all three planes. Large range of motion but stable, joints that bares largest weight. Holding the femoral head in the acetabular socket are some large ligaments. Within the socket itself is the ligamentum teres - keeps mfeural head in. Surrounding the socket to make it deeper is the acetabular labrum. Labrum closes off and makes the socket deep and increases surface area for the pressure(resulting in low pressure) Pressure in hip joint is slightly negative. Atmosphere pressure forces hip into the acetabulum.
