Document Summary

There are 5 joints to consider: shoulder, shoulder girdle , elbow, radial-ulnar joint, wrist. When we talk about the shoulder, we mean the glenohumeral joint. This is the articulation between the head of the humerus of the upper arm and the glenoid fossa of the scapula. This articulation is responsible for about 50% of your total range of motion of your arm with respect to your torso. The other 50% comes from the shoulder girdle. The glenoid fossa is a shallow depression in the lateral scapula. It is ringed by the rotator cuff made up of the tendons of the muscles that mobilize and stabilize the joint. The head of the humerus is a hemisphere (half a sphere) that fits into the glenoid fossa, like a golf ball on a tee. There is not much bony stability, so the rotator cuff is what stops dislocation.
