Sports/ pa/ games varied by time and place. Games and pa have existed in nearly all cultures. Today, there are fewer contrasts between the games that different people play. Decreasing constrasts are due to cultural diffusion and the power and influence of nation- states and sponsoring corporations (globalization) Modern sports have seven characteristics that have not appeared together in the past. Dsfs (dominant sport forms- sports today) today are not directly linked to religious beliefs. Played for personal gain/ enjoyment, not to appease god(s) Dsfs based on the idea that participation should not be regulated by birthright, social background, or social determinants birthright, social background, or social determinants. All participants in a sport should face the same competitive conditions, at all times. Everyone has to play by the same rules. All marathons need to be the same distance, balls need to be the same size, etc. When specialized you can perform better, because your focus is more narrow.
