A sub-discipline of sociology involving the study of "sports as a social phenomenon" (coakley, 2015) Do not focus on behaviour of specific individuals. Sport influences almost all aspects of our lives. Sport holds a prominent place in our society. Everybody watches the superbowl, athletes are paid more than almost everyone else (except some hollywood stars), coaches in the states make a lot of money, newspaper sections dedicated to sport, tv channels dedicated to sports. Consumption of, valuation of, and participation in sport have potential for positive and negative outcomes. Positive impacts: brings people together, national pride, teaches discipline and skill. Sports are a big component of gender division (male sports have more funding, opportunity, different rules, etc. ) There"s no female football, female hockey is completely different than male) See "implicit bias, framing, and media" in the textbook. Focus on women that meet certain societal standard of beauty and women who excel in "feminine" sports like tennis (not hockey or baseball)
