Kinesiology 3222A/B Lecture 10: Adrenal Gland and Pancreas
Document Summary
Drains blood from right side to ivc directly. Drains blood from left to renal vein then to ivc. The cortex and medulla have different embryological origin. Increase blood levels of na and water: similar to adh. Only one other than gonads that is steroid based. Nervous tissue bc derived from neural crest. Role is to prepare body for acute dramatic response. Long term stress causes crh to be released. Acth released to stimulate mineralocorticoids and/or glucocorticoids. Alpha: glucagon (hyperglycemic hormone - put glucose in blood) Beta: insulin (hypoglycemic hormone - take glucose out of blood) Where the alpha, beta, delta are located. 3 major vessels off of the abdominal aorta. Glycogenolysis: breakdown of glycogen to glucose. Gluconeogenesis: glucose from lactic acid, fats, aa. Stimulates glucose storage into cells (liver, muscle, adipose) Inhibits breakdown of glycogen or synthesis of glucose. Glucose stored as glycogen in liver therefore blood sugar lowered. Accounts for 1/2 of all non traumatic limb amputations.
