Document Summary

Understand terminology pertaining to sections of the spinal nerves. Differentiate between the types of information carried in different sections. List the key features of somatic sensory pathways. Segmental spinal nerves carry efferent and afferent information. Spinal cord for cns extends down from the medulla (last structure of the brain). Has segmental division, or levels which the branches leave from which carry afferrent and efferent information. Cervical (neck) thoracic (trunk) lumbar (abdominal/lower back) sacral (hip/sacrum) coccygeal (tail bone) Has similar meningeal coverings just like for the brain (work backwards now), they carry on down from the brain. Pia mater is the innermost layer, shiny look to the spinal cord, lots of vessels present in this layer. Around the spinal cord have denticulate ligaments (tooth-like projections) that come off the sides of the spinal cord. They are connective tissues that anchor the spinal cord in place.
