Kinesiology 3222A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Zona Pellucida, Acrosome Reaction, Cervix
Document Summary
Creates thick cervical mucous and prevents sperm from passing into the uterus. During first two weeks (pre-embryo) it is susceptible to spontaneous abortion but not teratogens. During 2-8 weeks (embryo-genesis) is the most sensitive to teratogenic events. After 8 weeks (fetal period) it varies more. Pregnancy: events from time of fertilization (conception) until infant is born. Sperm capable of fertilizing egg for 24-72 hours. Must undergo capacitation and acrosomal reaction when sperm are near ovum. Confers ability to swim rapidly and to fertilize egg by engaging flagella of the sperm. Several sperm soldiers must sacrifice themselves as they dissolve zona pellucida until one can penetrate the plasma membrane entering away the the ovum. Become pro-nuclei (haploid genetic material of each person) Chromosomes replicate and complete first mitotic division within 24 hrs. Sperm deposited within vagina or cervix day of ovulation. Collect sperm at the epididymis as it is the site. Where it becomes fully functional will be best.
