Kinesiology 3336A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Primary And Secondary Brain Injury, Edema, Synovial Fluid
Document Summary
Body goes through a predictable sequence of healing. Our treatment/ modality choice will be dependent on the phase of healing. Minimal ability to speed up this process, but interfering with this sequence will slow both recovery & return to sport ! Cellular injury= altered metabolism + release of chemical mediators/ proteins: these cause the inflammatory response. Increased temp, tenderness, pain, and loss of function. Damage as a result of body processes: edema, damage due to decreased bf, decreased oxygen. Proliferative and regenerative healing leading to scar formation and repair of injured tissue. Fibroplasia begins within the first few days and the inflammatory signs should decrease. Need to increase oxygen and blood flow. Beware- initially very delicate scar but increase in collagen fibres strengthens it. Athlete feels like they are ready to play, must hold them back. With increased stress and strain the collagen changes to type 1 fibres and begins realignment: type 3 type 1 collagen fibres.
