Document Summary
50-70% of body mass (weight); is essential for life. The fatter you are, the lower water % you have because fat does not contain water: decrease in body fluids (hypohydration or dehydration) affects exercise performance adversely, (as little as 2%; 2-3 lbs) Even small losses of water can affect endurance and strength performance. Without replenishment, you can become dehydrated and your ability to perform decreases drastically. Sweat losses can approach 2l/h and can be life threatening via effects on ability to regulate body core temperature. The ability to cool your body is compromised and temperature rises to life threatening levels. There are many athletes that die on a regular basis due to heat exhaustion and exercising in heat when they shouldn"t be. Sweating is initiated when your core temperature rises, and sweating prevents it from getting excessively high. Exercising in a humid environment, wearing a garbage bag, rubber suit, exercising in a sauna: can be very dangerous.
