Kinesiology 3347A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Plantar Reflex, Moro Reflex, Future Movement
Document Summary
Growth and development- chapter 6: early motor development. Spontaneous movement: movements not caused by known external stimuli. Doesn"t seem purpose driven, just moving for the sake of movement. Reflexive movement: stereotypical, involuntary responses caused by specific external stimuli. Current theory: building blocks for further movements, similar to some voluntary movement ex) supine kicks during infancy are coordinated; resemble position and timing of adult step. It occurs for roughly the first year of a baby"s life. Ex) spontaneous arm movement (resembles reaching), spontaneous supine kicking. Co-contraction: trying to lay the groundwork for smooth contractions (where the agonist and antagonist contract one after the other) by contracting these opposing muscle groups at the same time. Reflexes occur at the onset of stimuli. Involve single muscle or specific groups of muscles (not whole body). These are reproducible since they are caused by specific external stimuli. Infantile reflexes are only seen during early development.
