Document Summary

Prejudice (affective component): a hostile or negative attitude toward people in a distinguishable group, based solely on their membership in that group. Your gender, your sexual orientation, your religion, your weight, and even your age leave you vulnerable to prejudice. Old fashioned prejudice: prejudice revealed in nonsubtle, blatant ways. Modern prejudice: people who have become more careful to outwardly acting prejudiced even if they inwardly maintain their prejudiced views. Participants rated various out-groups even more positively than their own group to show how unprejudiced they were. Implicit attitudes: associative evaluations of an attitude object (person, object, or idea) Though everyone denies being prejudiced, the iat tells us that 70%-80% have a preference for white people. Stereotype (cognitive component): a generalization about a group of people in which identical characteristics are assigned to virtually all members of the group, regardless of actual variation among the members. Knowledge of stereotypes allows us to make quick, efficient judgments, thereby saving cognitive energy schemas.
