Document Summary

Group: a collection of three or more people who interact with one another and are interdependent, in the sense that their needs and goals cause them to rely on one another. Family, community groups, sports teams, classmates in a small seminar. Argued that in our evolutionary past, there was a substantial survival advantage to establishing bonds with other people. The groups to which we belong play an important role in defining who we expect to be in the future. Members tend to be alike in age, sex, beliefs, and opinions. There are two reasons for the homogeneity of groups: many groups attract people who are already similar before they join, groups operate in ways that encourage similarity in the members. Informal groups: groups that develop naturally or spontaneously within an organization and without any direction from management. Usually form due to common interest, proximity and friendships.
