Kinesiology 3347A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Intelligence Quotient, Highscope, Twin Study
Document Summary
Chapter 7 physical & cognitive development in early childhood. Both twin studies & studies of adopted kids show strong hereditary influences on iq (identical twins more alike than fraternal) Iqs of adopted children are better predicated from their biological parents than adoptive parents. Rearing conditions & iq in adopted infants: low ses = lower iq & high ses = higher iq (15 points higher on avg: regardless of their biological parents" ses. Genetic effect was evident in that the children born to upper class parents had higher iqs than those from lower class families: regardless of the environment they were reared in. Children in enriched preschool programs usually gain ~ 10 iq points after enrollment, but this iq gain usually fades within the 1st few yrs of school. Children from poverty-level families get the most benefit from enriched programs. If enriched programs start in infancy rather than at age 3 or 4 = (+) effects persist into adulthood.
