Document Summary

Chapter 15 physical & cognitive development in middle adulthood. Changes or declines in many physical functions occur very gradually through the middle adult yrs & may alrdy be substantial. Among adults who are otherwise healthy, the amount of loss is far less than previously believed. This period of life may be the intellectual & creative peak. New technology (primarily mri) has our knowledge of normal brain fn. White matter = volume crests during middle adulthood. Grey matter = volume continues its decline that began in childhood & doesn"t level off until age 60. New synapses are continuing to form in middle age, but unlike in the younger years, more synapses are lost than are formed. General rule of brain maturation = areas of the brain that develop last are the ones that begin to decline first (frontal & parietal lobes) Behavioural choices & mental health affect the adult brain.
