Explorers = relied on indigenous peoples and their knowledge on the land. Identity = working together to build forts, etc some identity still remains today. Did not do this with aim of adopting indigenous ways, adapted to own culture. If you became part of indigenous social grouping, would lose rights and position: strategic adoption of indigenous cultural practices and forms of survival, incorporation of those practices into an existing identity so as to strengthen it. Beaver fur spikey from guard hairs settlers would make friends with indigenous who knew how to remove guard hairs for soft pelts. Lacrosse for indigenous people = relationships, celebrations, etc. Settlers joining lacrosse allowed them to create connections with indigenous without forming actual relationships. Barbaric, savage behaviour considered ok as long as loyalty to garrison retained in book. Wakousta turns out to be love sick scottish man enacting revenge even worse because he has adopted the ways of indigenous not even just indigenous person.
