Santiago is a christ like figure, carrying the mast like the cross, stigmata: soars on his hands and feet where nails were driven into jesus. these cuts set up the parallel. Hemingway uses this parallel to paint the religion of christianity or idea of non physical spirituality as being empty or less favourable. less useful than this mythology or manly practice of baseball. Seems like he has a deep believe in religion but its quite superficial. His faith in this text is as if he is bargaining. His relationship with god/christian faith is compromised. His relationship with god is damaged and is secondary to his relationship to dimaggio and baseball which is more genuine.
