Kinesiology 3457A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Long-Term Memory, Working Memory
Document Summary
Working memory capacity: take what we know and use it. People with high working memory tend to perform well on standardized tests, be great writers, have great reasoning, and are great story tellers. Working memory is used when creating conversation, allows us to problem solve, and make decisions. Working memory is limited limited capacity, limited time (ie. forgetting your keys) Take home message: what we process, we learn. Functions of working memory: store immediate experiences/knowledge, reach into our long term memory, combine information to accomplish goals. Working memory capacity is leveraging what we can store to help us in a situation. We can store about 4 items for 10-20 seconds (unless we do something with it) Measuring mental workload: self report (ie. how dif cult did you nd that task? subjective tests, task performance (ie. task performance decreases with heavier mental workload, physiology (ie. eeg, mri, simple heart rate)
