Kinesiology 3371A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Deep Cerebellar Nuclei, Commissure, Grey Matter
Document Summary
Neuron: smallest functional unit of the nervous system. Neurons have synapses to receive information and collects at the dendrites. Grey matter: where the cell bodies are found at the surface in cortical areas and deep nuclei (e) White matter: the information highway (white because of myelin) Projection fibres: projects into the spinal cord and lower parts of the brain. The corpus callosum (a commissural bre) is the major structor connecting the 2 hemispheres. During embryonic development, the fetus only starts off with a forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. 3 functions of the brainstem: acts as a passageway for the bre tracts, heavily innervates the face and the head, produces the rigidity programmed, autonomic behaviours necessary for survival. All sensory information has to travel through the diencephalon. Maintains posture and balance and is involved in the coordination of voluntary movements (ie. force and timing of muscles) Connected to the rest of the brain via cerebellar peduncles.
