15 yr phenomenon, young 20-30 yr old men and die when admitted. Men w/ serious lung infection: pneumocystis pneumonia caused by a fungus <=west coast. Men w/ a new form of cancer: leisons around neck, back, mouth=>kaposi sarcoma <= east coast. New diseases targeting a new type of population. Aids= accquired immune deficiency syndrome (previously called grid, gay related immuno disease) Transmission at birth, heterosexually or with needles. Haart= highly active antiretroviral therapy = a cocktail drug. Hiv=retrovirus, have reverse transcriptase => drug targets rt. Family: retroviridae, subfamily: lentiviruses, two viruses from this subfamily: hiv-1& hiv-2. Rt make rna->dna => ssdna cant be transcribed => cellular dna polymerase make ds. Does not respect icosahedral symmetry, instead have conical nucleocapsid (protects genome etc. )
