Power: the ability to influence the behavior of others and resist unwanted influence in return. Just because a person has the ability to influence others does not mean they will actually do so. In addition to influencing others, power can be seen as the ability to resist influence attempt of others. The power may come from formal position, or any lack of formal authority. Legitimate power: a form of organizational power based on authority or position. Have the understood right to ask others to do things that are considered within the scope of their authority. The high up in an organization a person is, the more legitimate power he or she possess. This power generally does not give them the right to ask to do something being the scope of their job or roles within the organization. Used ineffectively, legitimate power can be a very weak from of it.
