100 years ago workplace was dark and violent place. Every employment relationship is contractual, whether the contract is in writing or not. If employees sign up for horrible conditions, courts have no place to interfere freedom to contract: basis for contracts isn"t about fairness, issue is voluntary. Factors that got us from where were to where we are now: development of middleclass. Had disposable income that workers didn"t used to have. With that income, developed a social conscience. Middleclass suggested to elected politicians that they were willing to give some back in form of social programs spreading wealth: female involvement in workforce. Women are closely aligned with social issues. Tend to champion issues of worker"s rights, occupational safety, child labour, etc : labour unions. Figured out that although individual employees have little negotiating power, collectively have a lot. Employers responded w/ violence to unions and workers who attended union meetings. Lots of legislation that interferes w/ employment contracts.
