Other critics feel that the move to a feminist theme is too obvious and heavyhanded: belle is smart, gaston is macho and chauvinistic: still about a pretty girl getting her man. Expanded from 84 minute movie (91 in later release) to 2 1/2 hour 2-act stage production. Called a mcmusical because the play you see on broadway is the same as what you will see everywhere with the same dance steps so there are no new ideas for the musical.
