Piano concerto in a major, k. 488, first movement. Melody- listen to the number and variety of the melodies, each with its own distinct character. Notice, too, how these melodies rarely appear in exactly the same guise twice. Form- listen for the entrance of the soloist and then later on for the return of the opening idea about two-thirds of the way through the movement, which marks the onset of the recapitulation. He was criticized in his time that there were too many and audiences couldn"t follow along very well. Two different expositions, one for orchestra and one for the soloist and the orchestra together. The rst exposition (for the orchestra alone) stays in the tonic. Only the second exposition (for soloist and orchestra together) modulates to new key areas.
