The medium is the message: we don"t know who invented water but we know it wasn"t a sh. A pervasive medium is always beyond reception (marshall mcluhan: hot and cool media based on the degree of involvement required on the part of a solitary reader/viewer/listener, cool: print material. The reader must be involved and absorbed with the source in order to achieve a meaningful experience: hot: movies and television. Technological change: piano, the piston valve and brass bands, the microphone, electric guitar, synthesizer, moog, midi, autotune. Technology and new genres: chicago blues and the electric guitar, ampli ers, rock and the microphone, mellotron, moog, theremin. Music & technology: krautrock and electronic rock of the 70s, disco and sound systems, turntables, hip hop and the boom box, drum machines, synthpop/new wave and midi, video television, electronic dance music and laptops, home studios, le sharing.
