She described a nurse"s proper function as putting the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him or her (nature to her meant god) She put forth the idea that care of the sick is based on knowledge of persons and their surrounding, which was a different knowledge base than what physicians used for their practice. What nurses do is different from what physicians do. Eras of knowledge development in nursing: curriculum era. Helped identity what prospective nurses should study; what we needed to learn. During this time we learned that nursing education should change from hospital based education to university education. Emerged when more nurses started to attend university. Empirical science was considered the ultimate form of knowledge. Research courses started to be included in nursing programs. Development of new knowledge from research, nursing became a science.
