Starts in pns and travels up spine into cns. If there is enough pain, it goes through the gate . Controlling pain closing the gate cns does not perceive it as pain anymore. Nurse needs to assess effectiveness of pain meds to different people. Can develop into chronic pain if left untreated: chronic (long term) Becomes a psychological issue people become frustrated from dealing with pain on a daily basis stopped from doing everyday life things easily. Ex. sore throat: neuropathic pain, nociceptive pain. Do not where the source of pain is. Physiological: age, fatigue, genetics, neurological function, hormonal. Adults are less likely to report pain due to fear of medical side effects, fear of a loss of independence. Pain is tiring, coping is harder during psychological fatigue- increases perception of pain: attention, previous experiences, supports, spirituality, background. Previous experiences negative/positive interaction with healthcare worker, resignation to pain. Psychological factors: ways of knowing: anxiety, coping style.
