Dermatomes: the surface of the skin divided into specific areas called dermatomes. You would assess this if the client says the pain radiates. Just understanding that they are clues about the cause of the pain presenting. Fast (how to spot a stroke: face dropping, arm weakness, speech difficultly, time to call 911. Stuporous: difficult to arouse, slow response, minimal spontaneous movement, responds to pain. Unresponsive: unable to waken, no spontaneous movement, may still respond to pain. Speak, shout, shake, pain (how to wake someone up) Spontaneous: enter the room and observe arousal. Usual voice: state patient"s name; ask him or her to open eyes. Loud voice: use loud voice if no response to usual voice.
