Atherosclerosis has been found in the arteries of children and adolescents. Calcification of the arteries causes them to become more rigid. If patient is in acute pain assess for 6 ps: pain (acute and severe, pallor (mottled looking skin, pulselessness, poikilothermia, or polar sensation (cold to touch, paresthesia (a burning, tingling, or numbness, paralysis (lack of movement) Pain and paresthesia are the most reliable. If pulse is not palpable in the foot move proximally up to the femoral: in the arm it is from radial to brachial. When pulse is not palpable a doppler ultrasound device is helpful. Bo x 2 0 - 1 cardiovascular risk factors: smoking, hypercholesterolemia, diet high in saturated fats, sedentary lifestyle, hypertension, diabetes, obesity. Thromboembolism should be monitored for as a possible side effect of trauma. Arterial damage can also result from trauma such as penetrating or blunt- force injuries: genetics. Family history of diabetes increases a person"s risk of developing the same condition.
