Nursing 2220A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Financial Plan, Critical Thinking, Public Health Surveillance
Document Summary
The successful control and management of communicable diseases is integrally tied to using epidemiology. Through data analysis, the investigator may uncover the cause or source of the disease. Active surveillance is the collection of data utilizing screening tools, interviews, and sentinel systems to identify disease occurrence in the community when individuals present with suggestive symptoms. This relies on the healthcare provider to notify the local health authority of clients with signs and symptoms associated with a reportable disease. It also relies on lab test results if the disease or infectious agent is on the reportable disease list for the respective province/territory. A report must include all the necessary demographics of the person, the symptoms and date of onset of the presenting illness, and travel history, and may include social history, sexual history, diagnostic tests done to date, and prescribed treatment.
