A systemic inflammatory response to the presence of infection (such as gram-positive or gram-negative bacteria, fungi, viruses, mycobacteria, or parasites) Can progress to circulatory systemic dysfunction, multiple organ failure, and death, sepsis is a complex disease process that carries a high degree of morbidity and mortality. Like fever, sepsis is part of the normal immune response by the body to fight off foreign invaders. The body brings some pretty toxic things to the party to kill the buzz. Elderly chronic critically ill, comorbidities, increased age and decreased ability to fight infection.
