Philosophy 1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 43: Savings Account, Deductive Reasoning, Binomial Distribution
Document Summary
A major breakthrough in the development of science was the use of mathematics to model the world. Since numbers are everywhere, it is important to understand numbers in order to be an effective critical thinker. A key thing to recognize about numbers is that we use them to represent features of the world. It is the feature that interests us; the number is a way of measuring that feature. And as with every type of representation, what we find depends on what we focus on, what we measure and how we measure it. Recall that every representation highlights some information and leaves out other information. As a recent example, scanning brains during tasks such as reading or arithmetic calculation to see what part of the brain is active using functional magnetic resonance imaging fmri has become an important method in theorizing about brain function.
