We all have different ideas of immortality (i. e. living forever in a mortal body, vampirism, etc. ) Em has an elixir that will allow her to maintain her body in the exact state it is now until she decides to stop taking it. After 342 years of living, she chooses to stop taking the elixir and just die of natural causes (old age). Immortality would eventually lead to boredom and indifference. We are lucky to have the chance to die at some point. Relates back to seneca in that living a longer life isn"t necessarily better than living a would be a bad thing. shorter one. Death is something that is rational to be fearful of it is something that you should not desire and be afraid of and actively avoid it. It is important to note that em is not actively killing herself; rather, she is just allowing herself to die. Every single activity will eventually exhaust itself.
