Ethics and value theory october 24, 2016. Maximize welfare/happiness for the aggregate of all sentient beings: justice and torture, helps with security but violates individual rights, conflict. In theory vs. in practice: sometimes the cost-benefit analysis is not good enough it is contingent. Objection: constraint/restriction on what we are allowed to do. Objection: options/permissions: to do less than what is best for the aggregate, this condition is too demanding, eg. Give away all your wealth for someone who needs it more (produce more happiness: bernard williams, relies on fundamental moral importance, not cost-benefit analysis. Williams wants to attack the above view (1) george is a chemist and the chemical and biological weapons factory. George can"t work so his wife has to. He can"t take care of his children. Gets offered a job in weapons factory, but this job doesn"t follow his view. Ted also wants the job, but if he gets the job, he will make more weapons than george.
