What is a sound argument? (2 pts: valid argument: truth of premise guarantees truth of conclusion, sound argument: a valid argument. premises are in fact true. Previously in the course, we focused on the question of moral status. People have a right to self-determination: a right to determine what will be done to them consistent w/ their values. Foundation of the doctrine of informed consent: physician is required to discuss treatment options w/ the patient, she must obtain the consent of the patient before proceeding w/ treatment. Autonomy is closely tied to the notion of competence: whether an individual is capable of making a decision for which she will be held responsible.
