Causes us to aim at the mean. Virtue = state of character involving decision that exists in a mean relative to us that is determined by us, a practically wise person. Practical wisdom = practical wisdom; excellence in deliberation. Non-rational desire (housed in the appetitive part of the soul): 1. Appetite: desire for sensual pleasures of food, drink, and sex; primary source of impulses temperance. Rational desire (housed in the rational part of the soul): 2. Wish: a desire for something we consider good and worth pursuing; sets the goal that forms the starting-point of deliberation: sets our goals/values, 3.
