Philosophy 1020 Lecture 45: March 26, Personal Identity-Locke Lec 45
Document Summary
Personal identity": preliminary matters: two kinds of identity, synchronic at the same time. The two objects are qualitatively identical, same picture and same stuf on pages. But at a given time, they occupy two diferent spaces; they"re not numerically identical. Two things are qualitatively identical if they have all their properties excepted spatial temporal location in common. Two things are numerically identical if they have all their properties including spatial temporal location in common: diachronic through time (spatiotemporal continuity) Take one book on march 26, 2003, and another book on march. Their qualities will not be exactly the same (book gets old and used) Ex hypothesis their spatio-temporal properties are not the same. But we would say they are the same book it the two are in spatio-temporal continuity with each other. Aka at no point does it stop existing: the question of personal (diachronic) identity.
