Document Summary

Module 10 - adverse drug reactions and medication errors. Unintended or undersired responses from drugs (7. 5% of hospital admissions) Adverse drug reactions: side. Secondary to main effects expected occur at normal therapeutic doses and unavoidable. Due to: poor specificity or selectivity of the drug. Antihistamines blocking h1 histamine receptors to prevent allergies. Side effects drowsiness, dry mouth, and urinary retention. Antihistamine bins to histamine vasoconstricts (prevent vasodilatation) and attach to other receptors = side effects. Drug toxicity can be considered as any severe adverse drug event. Mediated by overdose where pts unintentionally or intentionally take too much medication. These types of reactions are often extensions of the therapeutic effect. A pt who takes too much insulin will experience hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) Upon subsequent exposure to the drug an allergic reaction will occur. The intensity of allergic reactions are independent of dosage size. Therefore small doses can produce severe allergy. Roughly 10% of all adrs are related to drug allergy.
