Freedom is not the capacity to do what we want. instead, freedom is obedience to laws we give ourselves. freedom is self government. Rousseau: the mere impulse of appetite is slavery, while obedience to a law which we prescribe to ourselves is liberty . Tuesday, october 4, 2016 we can be coerced and free. Coercion: we are forced to comply with laws. So, coercion is compatible with freedom: we can be forced to be free (rousseau) government distinguished from legislation.
