What is politics: elections, demonstrations, policy decisions (wind power, solar power, public health, etc. , law making. Politics matters: decisions affect you, decisions are enforced laws assign rights & duties. Institutions matter: haiti & dominican republic: different environmental conditions are mainly the consequence of political decisions, property rights, enforcement of contracts, distribution of power, constraints of power. Some meanings of politics: formal government activity (e. g. legalizing weed, dishonestly seeking personal gain, noble pursuit of the public good, (cid:862)(cid:449)ho gets (cid:449)hat, (cid:449)he(cid:374), a(cid:374)d ho(cid:449)? (cid:863) Primates: a biological order that includes humans, apes, and monkeys, humans are the crulest. Politics = who gets what, when, and how: chimpanzee politics, competition, power, conflict, dominance strategies & alliances, winners and losers, bonobo politics, peaceful (more or less, gentle and loving, erotic and eglatarian (equal, no hierarchy) Where is politics: family, economy, state, everywhere - the personal is political. Aspects of politics: collective action, conflict & cooperation, authoritative decisions, enforced against the disobedient.
